Black Girls Need Sunscreen Too - And This One Goes On Clear
Boob sweat season (aka Summer) is around the corner and if you don't already know, you need to get yourself some sunscreen! Yes, this applies to women of color too. Enter Black Girl Sunscreen.
I grew up playing outdoors and spending summers in Jamaica, so sunscreen has always been a part of my life. How safe the sunscreen was that my parents were using on us kids - I'm not really sure. But I can assume it was the regular big brands like Banana Boat that had me and my brother looking ashy as hell on the beach!
One thing I can be grateful for is that my mom knew to put sunscreen on us, because it is a common misconception that we don't need sunscreen. News flash: BLACK GIRLS NEED SUNSCREEN TOO! Here's why:
- Melanin does not protect against all UV rays
- Sun can cause damaged, dry skin that leads to early wrinkles
- Sunburn sucks, and black people can get sunburned too
- Overexposure to sun can cause skin cancer
As I'm sure we can all relate to, the experience of wearing the average sunscreen SUCKS. Especially for black people. Why? Because the ingredients used in typical sunscreens leave behind a white residue that resembles ashy skin. And we all know ashy skin on the beach is just unacceptable. Plus they are often full of fragrances and yucky chemicals like parabens, oxybenzone, and octinoxate. Blah.
Now of course, at that at the time my parents (and yours too) probably had no idea what these chemicals were or that they are harmful. But there I was as a kid, living my best life on the beach, chemicaled up and looking dusty AF. So grateful we have access to more information now so that doesn't have to be the case with my kid!
I was fortunate enough to discovered Black Girl Sunscreen when it was just coming out over a year ago - the creator, Shontay Lundy, just so happens to be an old friend of mine. She told reached out asked me to sample and review it for my readers. Being that I am all about natural products (plus Shontay is a BAWSE), I already knew it would be amazing. And it was. But what stood out the most to me when I tried it for the first time was that IT WENT ON CLEAR. I couldn't believe it. Where had this been all my life?
In addition to going on clear and leaving no residue behind, Black Girl Sunscreen has very natural ingredients in comparison to other sunscreens on the market. But what matters, even more, is what is NOT inside - this product contains no Oxybenzone or Octinoxate. Winning.
Here is a quick break down of the natural goodies inside:
Avocado. Avocado moisturizes, reduces signs of aging, and treats sunburns. Avocado is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants which are super beneficial to your skin.
Jojoba. Jojoba soothes and moisturizes the skin leaving it flawless. Andddd it prevents acne. Plus is hydrates, which is important in the sun to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
Cacao. Cacao provides powerful anti-oxidants and evens out the complexion of your skin for a smooth, consistent skin tone. We definitely need that for the beach!
Carrot Juice. Carrot juice is known for its vitamin C, which enables it to promote healing and even boost the level of melanin in the skin.
Sunflower Oil. Sunflower oil revents skin irritation from sunburn and other skin irritants. This nutrient-rich oil provides inflammation relief as well, which is great if you experience any burn.
Black Girl Sunscreen also has an SPF of 30, which is within the recommended range of the AAD and well above the FDA recommendation of SPF 15. I have had no issues with using the Black Girl Sunscreen on my toddler since he was about 18 months old. But they do have a Black Girl Sunscreen Kids line out now with an SPF of 50, so you can grab a separate tube for your little ones! No excuses!
When it comes to actually using it, the product itself is white in color, feels light and goes on smooth. It has no fragrance, and again, leaves behind no white residue. I tend to sweat more ever since I had my son, but this sunscreen does actually handle sweat well and won't leave you feeling all slimy. Just sexy :-)
And just like any other sunscreen, it is a good idea to reapply after a couple of hours and of course after coming out of the water!
Black Girl Sunscreen has become a part of my daily facial routine and works EXCELLENT with makeup. Seriously tho, it actually makes the application of it easier - I will show you this in a video later. I have told ALL my mom friends about it, and I also had my whole family make the switch.
You can purchase Black Girl Sunscreen directly from their website, select vendors and even in mommy paradise - Target!
