My name is Nicky Dawkins and I am a Full Spectrum Doula, Journalist, Activist and established Mompreneur based in sunny Miami, FL. I am the mother of a very energetic and adorable Leo toddler, Nasir. My parents hail from Jamaica and I was born under the Zodiac sign of Cancer – Sun in Cancer to be exact. I have a huge passion for feminine health, and over the years launched several ventures that surround the wellness of women, particularly mothers.
Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way, shall we? I have a Bachelor’s or Arts in Communications from Florida International University and a Masters of Science in Entertainment Business from Full Sail University. Before entering the world of motherhood, I worked in the music business for 5 years in music publishing, journalism, marketing, and management. I had the pleasure of working with a variety of major and local artists and labels including Def Jam and Universal Music. But I am SO happy those years are behind me! As much as I loved working in music, it became a toxic space for me. It stopped making me happy. In fact, it started making me really withdrawn from life. I had to stop feeding that negative energy. As soon as I became pregnant, I choose to leave and started focusing on work that would make a difference. More importantly, work that would better the lives of women and hopefully make the world a better place for my son. And then there was a new Nicky.
Today, I have 2 active blogs including this one, ThankYouNicky.com. This is my newest platform, and I offer pregnancy, postpartum and infant loss Doula services. I also blog about feminine health, wellness, and natural beauty targeting pregnant and postpartum mothers. I focus on topics surrounding vaginal health, self-care and DIY beauty remedies for mom and baby. I also share my personal struggles and stories as I navigate through motherhood and co-parenting. In December 2017, I was awarded Best Health Blogger in South Florida by the Blogger Union. Woohoo! I have also had the pleasure of speaking at several women’s conferences including Fem Fest Miami, Women’s Expo, BlackGirlsBloom and MommyCon.
On my first website, HypeGirls.com, I interviewed mothers and mother-owned businesses about important issues millennial mothers are facing today. While I am open to giving a platform to any woman who is making a change, on that platform I did try to focus on women and brands within the maternal health and feminine health space. Even though I no longer blog on HypeGirls.com, it gave me some incredible experiences. I have had the pleasure of working with and interviewing then women behind many amazing companies, including Kali Boxes, Diva Cup, Kalao, Steamy Chick, Nene Fem Health, vFit and Vagasil. Within HypeGirls, I also hosted a kick-ass podcast on Millennial Mama Drama that I will carry over to this blog.
In early 2018, I decided to launch Miami’s first chapter of PERIOD.org, PERIOD Miami, an organization that collects feminine hygiene products for homeless women and low-income families. I became a “Vagucator” and hosted workshops that teach women about different feminine hygiene and health options, including menstrual cups and organic tampons. Our partners include the fellow charities The Beauty Initiative, COPE High School, and Lotus House.
After the success of these brands, I started Werk it Moms, a community that specializes in creating experimental events for mompreneurs. Through Werk it Moms, I am able to connect corporate brands with moms in the South Florida community who would like to start their own businesses. I also partnered with Capital One to host Mamaprenuer Brunch & Learn workshops every month in my community. During these workshops, I bring in a local, successful mamapreneur to share her journey and give tips to other mothers who want to launch a business from home.
Currently, I am Mama Glow Full Spectrum Doula, trained under the guidance of Latham Thomas. With this certification, I hope to expand the shortage of Doulas of color, as well as provide more birthing support and general information about maternal health in my community. You can learn more about all of my Doula related training and certifications here.
When I am not working on my blog and businesses, I love spending time outdoors and doing projects with my son! I have a huge passion for gardening and enjoy showing him how to grow his own food. ?
